Still, all in all, this is a great book and highly recommended as a more "entry level" study of the Gettysburg campaign. But again, without footnotes, you'll have to take his word for their veracity. /rebates/2fp2fStars-Their-Courses2fShelby-Foote2f9780679601128&.com252fp252fStars-Their-Courses252fShelby-Foote252f978067960112826afsrc3d126SID3d&idbooksamillion&nameBOOKSAMILLION. So his book is filled with texture-little experiences in the lives of common soldiers (and leaders) that never seem to make it into the history books, but which make the story live. Remember, Foote is more of a novelist/storyteller than an academic historian. Don't look for footnotes here because they'll only slow you down. I know it might sound strange, but otherwise his broken sentences can be a bit confusing. I found that this book was best read by "hearing" Foote's voice. Obviously there's a difference between the written word and the spoken word. Foote writes like he talks-with lots of dashes interrupting his thought. As I read "Stars in Their Courses," at times I began to hear his voice, almost as if it was an audio book. If you're familiar with the Ken Burns series on the Civil War, you know Shelby Foote's voice. The puppies had licked all the paint off the paper. When he woke up, the papers he painted on were bare. The illustrator painted many pictures one day and then fell asleep. One time she gave two puppies to someone who was going to draw a book with that kind of dog. She also taught illustrators to draw the way a child saw things. She tried to write the way children wanted to hear a story, which often isn't the same way an adult would tell a story. She said she dreamed stories and then had to write them down in the morning before she forgot them. There are many scraps of paper where she quickly wrote down a story idea or a poem. She thought this made children think harder when they are reading. Sometimes she would put a hard word into the story or poem. She liked to write books that had a rhythm to them. Most of her books have animals as characters in the story. Even though she died nearly 70 years ago, her books still sell very well. Margaret Wise Brown wrote hundreds of books and stories during her life, but she is best known for Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny. It consists of al-Hazred's account of his travelling quests for forbidden knowledge, his apprenticeship as a necromancer, and his attempts to summon various of the Great Old Ones - a blanket term for the many horrifying multidimensional entities created by Lovecraft, most notably including Cthulhu. The Necronomicon is generally depicted as an ancient book bound in human skin, an English translation of the blasphemous tome Al-Azif 2 by the Mad Arab Abdul al-Hazred - a name Lovecraft had used in Arabian Nights role-play in his childhood. The Necronomicon features prominently in the middle and late period fiction of HP Lovecraft, from about 1926, when The Call of Cthulhu was published, to 1937, the year of his death, according to HPL scholar ST Joshi 1, This was when he wrote the stories that are now collectively referred to as the Cthulhu Mythos. However, a more informed analysis points to -icon as a generic Greek noun ending, so the name may more accurately be translated as 'Concerning the Ways of the Dead'. With a rough knowledge of Ancient Greek, he parsed the name thus: HP Lovecraft said in letters to some of his many correspondents that the name Necronomicon came to him in a dream, as did much of the inspiration for his fiction. Contrary to much popular speculation, the Necronomicon is actually a fictional concept, created by Howard Philips Lovecraft, an early 20th Century author of 'weird fiction'. As with The God Who Is There, it amazes me that Schaeffer wrote this over fifty years ago. Although I occasionally struggled to grasp a point here or there, or became confused when it seemed like he was explaining the same concepts in depth for a second time, and even disagreed with him on several points (or at least thought he misrepresents a few thinkers, based on my limited knowledge), Escape from Reason is very densely packed with earnest thought that is helpful in navigating the monolithic cultural worldview that has resulted from our virtual connectedness. Schaeffer begins with Thomas Aquinas, who distinguished between the notions of “nature” and “grace” in the 13th century and follows this distinction through theology, philosophy, art, and culture, from the pre-Reformation through the Renaissance and up to the existentialists of the 20th century. “These things are never merely theoretical, because men act the way they think.”īuilding upon the ideas that he put forth in The God Who Is There, Francis Schaeffer’s Escape from Reason is a further plea to modern Christians to engage our degenerating culture in honest debate, to understand the thought forms that have insidiously crept into it, and to pit these newfangled worldviews against the unchanging Word of God. And she will stop at nothing to destroy anyone who threatens to take him from her. But the bond between them awakens the vengeful spirit of Alexander’s past love, Isobel.
